netgear16 red light on

I have a Netgear16 modem a few month old and a new Acer Aspire E15 laptop with Windows 8.1 (purchased yesterday) on which I am trying to install Debian through a netinstall.

At some stage, the installer asks to select a mirror to download the software, after the selection is made, I get a message to the effect the installer is probing the mirror but then it fails.

I got under pressure to give the laptop back to its user before I had a chance to follow the suggestion to have a look at the log but regardless of what the log can say, there is a red light comming on on the modem and it systematically fails in the same manner on each of the mirrors given in a list of about 20.

I am puzzled by this red light which need to be reset by powering off and on but accessing the Internet gives no problem.

Can anyone suggest what could be triggering that red light? Or is the log the only clue?

Thank you for your help.

I was wrongly under the impression UEFI could not be disabled on this computer but after trying again I found it could be disabled which provided the old BIOS under which I was able to install Debian 8 (netinstall) without the red light coming up.
