Wendel,

Sorry for being off this topic..... but upon searching I see that you have a Netfinity 7000 running RH9....how did you get it to run??
Apparently you had some interrupt issues with the ASM card???

I have 3 of these with 4-proc and 4gb memory each will not run ANY distro with stability.

paul@tera-comm.net

thanks.....Peace Out

Well, I just installed RH9 and away they went.

/me shrugs

I'm not too pleased with the disk throughput that I've seen. I think that is what you were referring to. I think I had the ASM card and the ServeRAID card mixed up in my head for a bit.

Or mabye is was the damn ASM card that had me hung... hell, I don't remember.

But as far as getting RH9 on em, I haven't had any problems. What exactly is happening with yours?

Sorry to hijack your thread....LOL

Kernel panics, aiee killing interupt handler, EIP faults, etc.... RH 8.0 is the most stable....at least it will boot up for a while (10 minutes) before taking a dump. Only after noapic is appended to grub though.

Kernel logs look fine...only thing out of the ordinary is a single cannot assign interrupt message. Other than that, clean.

These machines ran 2.2.x on RH 6.x for almost 2 years without reboot, reliable as the sunrise. They don't like
2.4.xsmp at all. Very frustrating.......and after two days of meta searches, no answers.

So you just plopped in the RH9 cd and booted 'er up for install and no issues running a SMP kernel???

These quad Xeon machines are base on the Intel 450NX xhipset...only errata I found for any distro of Linux was an issue with the IDE DMA controller being disabled.

Help me fix this, and I will hand a case of your choice malted beverage to the UPS guy for immediate delivery.

does this machine have a ServeRAID controller? If so, what Raid level are you workin with?

sanwizard 09-20-2004 08:41 AM

yes, a serveraid 3HB w/64mb cache....however, I tried removing it and just booting from the onboard aic7xxx controller....no difference. The kernel panics continue.

I have also used an AMI megaraid controller and a LSI logic 53c8XX controller....no difference. I do no think it is a scsi issue.

How much memory does your 7000M10 have??? My three machines all have 4gb......

I ran the onboard diagnosics....no problems. Also installed Win2K Advanced Server, no issues with Win2K.....???? Installed all of the Netfinity 7000M10 drivers for Win2K, no problems with any onboard devices.

Wendel,

Would you mind giving me a call??

thanx,

Will do man, I have a meeting at 10 and will get back to you afterwards.

Is your kernel compiled such that it allows you to make use of that much memory?

I think the config param is "CONFIG_HIGHMEM4G" or something.

You *may* need to custom compile your kernel to allow for that much RAM. Before doing this, try pulling some of it out and rebooting.

Oh, and my servers have at most 1 gig of RAM.

sanwizard 09-22-2004 03:17 PM

Already done that, depopulated down to 512mb.....still kernel panics with interrupt handler not syncing errors.

Gents,
I'm going to split this into a new thread and move it to the Linux - Hardware forum. It's certainly diverging and I think it will be better served there.
