Need some Advice
I just purchased a new compaq AMD Athlon XP 2000
I deleted the factory windows xp and installed Redhat 8.0
Everything went fine, except the sound.
It said it detected the sound card, but no sound?
Here is the card info:
Vendor: VIA Technologies
Model: VT8233 AC97 Audio Controller
Module: via82cxxx_audio
I went to RedHat's site and looked up compatible hardware and this card shows to be on the system list of okay hardware, with a very easy install procedure.
Am I doing something wrong?

Are you getting any sound? Mp3s or cd. You probably just need to do a bit of configuring. See what the permissions are on /dev/dsp and /dev/mixer, might need to set them which # chmod 666, as root. Also look at you modules.conf and make sure it's uncommented there. Could try running sndconfig as well. If it's just mp3s your having trouble with, then that's on Redhat, but you can get around that here: http://www.gurulabs.com/downloads.html or here: www.xmms.org. Also make sure the volume is up... I used to run Redhat and had to deal with all this too (not that it's redhat's fault, that's just part of setting up sound under linux). This is just stuff I got from noodling around here. Good luck!

Okay here is the latest,
I ran the update and updated all the packages as well as the latest kernel.
I searched the site and found in another post where someone made a patch rpm package, when I run it from my home directory I get an error saying it needs kernel number so and so, well I have that kernel.
Another interesting thing is this, following the advice above I tried to set my sound level and got this.
" I was not able to open your device. Please make sure you have permission to open /dev/mixer and make sure you have sound support compilied into your kernel."
Not sure where to go from here?
By the way, I love linux. I have used Windows all my life and when I bought this new computer today, I booted into XP and almost got literally sick I missed linux so much, so I wiped it clean and installed RedHat 8.0

Did you change the permissions on /dev/mixer and /dev/dsp?

yes I just did,
But it still said something about not having permission to the mixer part, I even went back and changed to 777 and it still won't let me in?
Thanks for the help by the way
