I dont think you can go wrong if you buy a usb headset, as it will recognize it like a usb sound card, i have tried a few (el cheapo's) myself and have had no significant problems other than the already existing 82801DB - ICH4 onboard sound that will need to be set as a '2nd' choice in case the headset is not plugged in. I must say that Linux has leaped forward in its hardware support to a point that even guys like myself can 'mouse' their way through, a big thank you for the writers and maintainers of the GUI's out there freely available.
