Need Imac To Run Linux!
 

I have an Apple IMAC (NEW WORLD)

G3 333MHZ
160MB RAM
6GB Hard Drive
MAC OS 8.6

I would like to install a version of either YellowDog Linux or a version of Mandrake Linux for the PPC on it.

I did try to get it to run Yellow Dog off it's own hard drive w/o MAC OS on there, but i could not get the thing to boot.....

So here comes my question.....

I was wondering if anyone knows of a way I can re-size the partitions (like I can with my Windows Machine & Partition Magic) and then run a dual boot....

I am extremely new to the Mac World and have never even used these things....so I am completely clueless on what type of partitioning scheme I should use, and how to get MAC OS to recognize the Linux Partition so that I can select it in the "Startup Disks" menu....

I was wondering what I should do to solve these little problems....

I have ordered a copy of OS 9 (the Imac didn't come with the OS CD), and was just going to partition it using the OS 9 Setup, leaving Space for linux.....

I'm brand new to Linux but I was reading last night about your exact problem. I'll try and find the info again.

The bits I remember...

YES it can be done! Your iMac needs a very small version of Mac OS to boot which should be on a seperate partition.

If you want to partition your drive (first back up everything you want to keep!) then boot from your system disk (CD) and open Drive Setup (Applications/Utilities).

I'll post the detailed info when I find it.

UMM seems you can get by without a Mac OS.

You can install YDL without having any Mac OS installs present by simply putting in the YDL install disc and holding down C on the boot to boot from the CD."
