Need help w/ wireless access.

Hi All,

I'm a Linux n00b and I've searched the archive and I've tried to read and follow the rules, so here goes:

I've got an HP ze4300 Pavilion using dual boot Win/Linux.

I'm running Fedora Core 1, kernel 2.4.22-1.2115.nptl

The results of /sbin/lspci look like this:
00:00.0 Host bridge: ATI Technologies Inc AGP Bridge [IGP 320M] (rev 13)
00:01.0 PCI bridge: ATI Technologies Inc PCI Bridge [IGP 320M] (rev 01)
00:02.0 USB Controller: ALi Corporation USB 1.1 Controller (rev 03)
00:06.0 Multimedia audio controller: ALi Corporation M5451 PCI AC-Link Controller Audio Device (rev 02)
00:07.0 ISA bridge: ALi Corporation M1533 PCI to ISA Bridge [Aladdin IV]
00:08.0 Modem: ALi Corporation Intel 537 [M5457 AC-Link Modem]
00:09.0 Network controller: Harris Semiconductor Prism 2.5 Wavelan chipset (rev 01)
00:0a.0 CardBus bridge: O2 Micro, Inc. OZ6912 Cardbus Controller
00:0c.0 FireWire (IEEE 1394): Texas Instruments TSB43AB21 IEEE-1394a-2000 Controller (PHY/Link)
00:10.0 IDE interface: ALi Corporation M5229 IDE (rev c4)
00:11.0 Bridge: ALi Corporation M7101 PMU
00:12.0 Ethernet controller: National Semiconductor Corporation DP83815 (MacPhyter) Ethernet Controller
01:05.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon Mobility U1

The PC side sez my wireless (built-in) adapter is LAN-Express IEEE 802.11 PCI Adapter. I can't seem to find a driver (or is it .rpm)? I guess folks may chortle and snort at this post, but if you can help, please do. If you need more info, let me know.

Thanks.

Also, I have an SMC 2835W (part # ends in 163) which I can't find drivers for, either. SMC certainly isn't providing them, though they do list Linux drivers in their support choices.

sometimes linux drivers are grouped together so if it says it supports your card type its usually under one big file not an individual driver file like windowz has so try downloading the drivers you found and see if they work out

er...

Sorry for the confusion my last post caused. I should clarify: SMC lists "Linux" in a list of drop-down boxes when you search for drivers. It even delineates kernel differences. But when you enter your information, there are no drivers there. I just find it strange that they list Linux but then don't provide drivers. So no, I don't have drivers.

Thanks for your post. I wouldn't have realized the confusion w/o your response.

Look for a winblows driver for it (bear with me...). Then download and install ndiswrapper (Click here) . Then type:
Code:
ndiswrapper -i driver.inf
where driver.inf is the path to the inf file.

Now, type ndiswrapper -m && modprobe wlan0 (the ampersands tell the computer to run both commands).

Now look at the file /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/wireless. Fill that information in a separate file in the same directory called ifcfg-wlan0. in the file make sure you include:

DEVICE=wlan0
TYPE=Wireless

/etc/init.d/network restart, or ifdown wlan0 && ifup wlan0 should get you going.
