need help reformating hdd!

i want to reformat my hdd to be recognized by both windows and all linuxes.

this hdd is purely for storage; i am not going to install any os on it.

can someone please tell me what i do after i go into:
Code:
cdfisk /dev/hda/
(please go easy on me, this is my first time reformating a hard disk)

btw, i am doing this from a live-cd.

also, if this 'hda' is plugged into a computer already with a hard drive, will it automatically become 'hdb'? or in windows' case, become 'e:/'?
