Hello,
I am a novice Linux user, and I am trying to install a SiS900 Ethernet OnBoard Chip. I use "modprobe sis900", and it says there is no such device. What can I do?
My Machine

Celeron 400
88 MB RAM
thanks

I don't use a module for the SIS900.Anyway with an install that uses modules the sis900 was detected but the module didn't load with modprobe. It did load with 'insmod sis900'
Something seems to be screwed up there - saw a lot of people complaining about it lately. For me it didn't work with debian and with gentoo everything is fine.
BTW: last time I installed connectiva I didn't have a problem with it.Do you have a pcchips mobo?

What have you guys got under /sbin/lspci? Also, what kernels, 2.4.18 (redhat 8.0 stock) is bloody arcahic now and only covers the first few revs of that SIS ethernet chipset.
00:03.0 Ethernet controller: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] SiS900 10/100 Ethernet (rev 90)
That one for instance, loads fine with the sis900 module... but this is with 2.4.20, under 2.4.18 I got it to load happy, but the driver would flake every once in a while.
Cheers,
Finegan

I used kernels ranging from 2.2.17 to 2.4.20 with this box.Did also use 2.4.18.I always compile the driver into the kernel - not as a module.Don't know if that is the reason I never had trouble with it.But I did have the same distro and version like MonteChristo on my box and it worked fine, too. There seems to be a problem with certain revisions of the chip.
