Need help installing Videocard ATI Radeon X300

Hello everyone,

I have an old pc that I'd like to setup as a media server.
In this pc there's a ATI Radeon x300 videocard. (Asus EAX300)

I've been following this guide to try and install it:
http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubu...ivers_manually

and all has run successful, but when I run fglrxinfo, it returns =>
Error: unable to open display (null)

Looking at my xorg.conf file I get the following result
Code:
Section "ServerLayout"
	Identifier "aticonfig Layout"
	Screen 0 "aticonfig-Screen[0]-0" 0 0
EndSection

Section "Module"
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
	Identifier "aticonfig-Monitor[0]-0"
	Option "VendorName" "ATI Proprietary Driver"
	Option "ModelName" "Generic Autodetecting Monitor"
	Option "DPMS" "true"
EndSection

Section "Device"
	Identifier "aticonfig-Device[0]-0"
	Driver "fglrx"
	BusID "PCI:1:0:0"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
	Identifier "aticonfig-Screen[0]-0"
	Device "aticonfig-Device[0]-0"
	Monitor "aticonfig-Monitor[0]-0"
	DefaultDepth 24
	SubSection "Display"
		Viewport 0 0
		Depth 24
	EndSubSection
EndSection
Hopefully someone can help me solve this issue.

ATI xXXX and xXXXX cards, like your x300, have had support dropped from the closed source (fglrx) drivers years ago.

You have to use the open source drivers, which should run 'out of the box'.

I've tried that and I noticed that even though it works, it's very buggy, and does not really run smooth.
So I've been trying to install the catalyst driver for it, without success thus far.

I do think I'm on to something. I'm currently downloading the Catalyst 9.3 drivers, considering that it's the latest version that should explicitly support the x300 videocard.

If there are any other tips/tricks/advices to increase the graphical performance of the machine, without actually purchasing new hardware, then do tell me.

Catalyst 9.3 will not work with any modern distribution.

Stick with the open source drivers and post about specific problems you're having with it.
