Need help installing a modem

I have Mandrake Linux 9.1 installed. (I have dual-boot with Windows XP Pro, and am online right now with Windows)

Data:
Version......................Mandrake Linux 9.1 2.4.21-0.13mdk
Modem......................Conexant 56k Data/Faxmodem

I don't know if it's a winmodem or not. I don't know how to tell.

Anyway, I went to driverguide.com, and their driver for Linux on it seemed to be corrupted. I tried different versions of the driver from driverguide, and they were all corrupted.

Then, I went to some site, but their installation instructions didn't list my kernel version.

So, I tried using their latest version insructions. I extracted the file into a directory. I logged in as su, and did ./ins_all and then it said it failed, and told me to reference the log file.

So I did, and then it said some .inf file name, and the line below it it said, No matching file found. But that file exists in the directory that everything else for the modem is in.

I have been ****ing with this damn thing for a week now and it's pissing me off. I had it installed once, so why can't I do it again?

I really need to get online!!! Windows is not an option.

Don't assume I know what you are talking about. The most usual command or acronym, or term will confuse me because I know almost nothing about Unix.

Thanks a lot!

I had the problem so I just went out and bought an external modem (most external modems work wonderfully in linux) if you don't want to do this go to http://www.linmodems.org/ and use the scanModem tool, then look in their database to see if its compatible.
