Need help getting Brother HL-2270DW printer to work with Ubuntu 10.04
OS: Ubuntu 10.04
Cups: 1.4.3
Router: Linksys WRT54G
Printer: Brother HL-2270DW
Note: this is a wireless printer. My linux box is not wireless, it is hardwired to my wireless router.
Brother supposedly has a driver for this. I went to the brother site, and installed the cups driver using ubuntu's default installer.
I went to install the printer on cups, and cups found the printer right away. I chose the correct printer. The printer name, and description were filled in automatically.
Then I got to a page that looks like this:
--------------
Add Printer
Name: Brother_HL-2270DW_series
Description: Brother HL-2270DW series
Location: Upstairs
Connection: dnssd://Brother%20HL-2270DW%20series._pdl-datastream._tcp.local/
Sharing: Share This Printer
Make: Brother
Model:
--------------
Everything was okay - except for the model. I had a long list of models to chose from, but the HL-2270DW was not there. The list went from the HL-2170W to the HL-2400Cen, skipping right over all the HL-22xx models.
Any advice would be appreciated. My guess is: this is yet another printer that is supposed to work with linux, but in reality will not. I have several printers, but none of them work with linux, when I want to print something, I have to use windows - it's a real problem.

Did you go through the pre-req list here --> http://welcome.solutions.brother.com...efore.html#002
before you installed the driver? One of the pre-req's is making a model directory ( see the instructions on the above link).
Just a suggestion, I have had very good luck with Brother printers. I would think this one should work also.
I see there is a new driver released.

Is this the one you have?
According to this link --> http://welcome.solutions.brother.com...valuation.html your printer is known to work with 10.04 32 and 64 bit versions; ( second last box ).

The HL-2270DW is on the list, very close to the top. Not embedded in the list as you would expect.
As to the printer working with the 64-bit distro, you can't prove it by me. I have the Brother drivers installed, although I had to use the --force-all option with dpkg. It didn't like the i386 program when my system is amd64, even though I have the 32-bit libraries installed. The system found the printer and connected with it just fine. But I can't print anything. That is a driver problem. And I'm frustrated.

Hmm, if you are sure it is the driver, I would suggest you go to Brother support, and report the issue to them. They write and support their code, as far as I know.

brother should have linux printer drivers on their website (just google it and it will come up) then install both of the files that are .deb and have your printer model listed (and when it comes to the scanner its done a little differently but they guide you through it. i have a brother printer and have been using it for about a year now. as far as i know brother printers should have the built in wlan card inside of them so they can function wirelessly without being connected to a computer that needs to be running 24/7 for people to use it. please note that you need all the ink cartridges full for it to work, i only have the black one full and it won't print anything. thats very weird

install lpr drivers too
Above you mentioned that you installed the cups driver. The instructions on the Brother page specify that you have to install lpr AND cups drivers. You also have to perform the pre-install steps. I originally missed this (only installed the cups driver because i was not using lpr) and experienced a similar (or possibly same) issue as you report. For me, everything worked once I installed the lpr driver and then reinstalled the cups driver. Hope that helps. (I am using ubuntu 10.10 on x64.)

Thanks. That is not explained in the instructions, at least I didn't see it when I read them. The printer is working now, but it isn't printing duplex, nor is it offering the duplex as an option. I can work on that later. Things are just a bit hectic around here right now. After 20 months of unemployment, I decided on a career change, and I got hired in less than a week. Now it's two weeks of school and five weeks of OJT, then I'll be fully employed. And it feels good!

In the future, do not hijack a thread. Your problem was similar but you should have created a new thread to address the issue(s).
Hopefully the OP garners something from your posts and replies to you from members.
Good luck!
