Hi --the one that worked for me was max blast, I got them all to see which one would work. I don't think they are really drive manuf. dependent-- they all set DMA levels, enable smart--that kind of thing. Max blast is billed as a partitioning/installing tool. It will try to make a copy of your drive if you use that feature-- I would try that first with it. It also has a repair function in the diagnostic windows - set it to do a full scan and click the "attemp to fix bad sectors" repair option ( you may see a screen here that warns of data loss--your call-- it fixed mine so I could get most of the data off--no guarantee your situation will be the same). If neither of those work you will have to spend some big money to recover the data with a professional service. If you want to try to save the drive and trash the data, use maxblast to try to do a low level format of the drive-- which worked for me after I got all the data I could off the drive. The low level format takes a long, long time as it trys to repair/format the disk--DON'T stop it(10 hrs for 120G drive for me). I lost a small ammount of data but ended up keeping the drive working. You can find a bootable cd image here:
http://www.maxtor.com/portal/site/Ma...&downloadID=57
or here:
http://www.softwarepatch.com/utilities/maxblast.html

It looks like you might have to hunt around for the previous versions that were released on floppy. Let me know here if you can't find it and I'll send you a copy of my maxblast floppy if you can't run /burn the cd image.

Forget what everybody have said and go directly to the manufacture which is IBM or Hitachi. Then run the damn utility. Hitachi has both an ISO for floppy/CD/DVD or floppy extract file.

Sorry, I am blunt but people just do not understand.

sparkbot, maxblast is only for Maxtor drives not for any other brands.

Electro--I was not sure how far drive manuf. dependence went with the disk tools, the IBM and Seagate disk tools I tried had no problem playing nice with my maxtor drive. Thank you for letting me know max tools wouldn't do the same on the other branded drives.

i went to hitachi site to download the drive fitness test program and it report the IBM disk is having trouble on SMART.
[quick test]

failure code:0x73-Defective Device . Excessive Shock.

Technical Result Code : 73009724

[Advance test]
failure code:0x73-Defective Device . S.M.A.R.T. Failure.

Technical Result Code: 720054D9

* I have try the test on the hitachi disk and it has no problem but there isn't any option on repair.
** Next I am going to try \easy recovery' as someone has similar problem with exact same hard disk had luck with it. Finger cross.
*** I suspect spinrite 6.0 screw up sth on my IBM disk as before using it, i have no error message on start up of computer.
