Need help choosing a power supply.

I'm running a P1-233 with a cpu fan, psup fan, and say 5 more additional fans.

It has a cdrom, tape drive, removable ide drive, floppy and 6 scsi drives.

I would like to know the wattage I need to have all that run with room to expand to a say athlon xp 1800-3000 or p4 1.8-3.0 along with another say 3 drives, 1 more cdrom and another 2 fans.

So a total of 10 drives, 7 fans, 4 bay devices and a new CPU/Mobo.

If there is a particular brand also, because i've heard generics are flimsy on the 12/5V lines, please let me know.

If there is also a good page on how to calculate this kind of stuff (preferrably with drop down boxes and auto calculate, if not that's ok) then also please let me know, thanks.

Someone suggested a 450W.. but i'm not sure, I can't seem to find too good of any guidelines on the net, especially to do with scsi drives.

Thanks for your time, and any response in advance.

Well what type of power connector do you have on the p1 motherboard? If it’s anything other than a ATX connection you have to find a adapter (if there is one for your particular connection). There was a round up on p/s's I think on tomshardware I will attempt to dig it up for you.

Whatever you do don't skimp on the p/s make sure you get a good one. Especially if you will be running a nforce2 motherboard they are extremely picky about the rails. I’ve heard a lot of praise for the higher wattage antec p/s’s but I’ve always preferred enermax myself. I think SCSI depending on if you are using 7200 or 10000 rpm drives power usage can run anywhere from 10-40watts according to this site http://www11.brinkster.com/bayup/doarticles.asp?a=27 .

I do believe there used to be a site for calculating stuff as you described but sadly I don't think its around anymore. Maybe someone knows if it still is.

The motherboard is a hybrid, but it is running on an ATX psupp now.

Umm I believe all of the drives are 7200 rpm, but let's assume that all are 10k to be safe when picking the psupp.

hmm, you know right now it has a cdrom, tape drive, 6 scsi, 1 ide, p1-233 + 2 fans and it runs fine on a 300W.

I think now that i've connected another 4 fans, i'm getting brown outs, the scsi drives shut off after a few minutes, but remain fine when the fans are not plugged in.

I will check that site out, thanks.

http://www.pimprig.com/forums/archive/topic/540.html - another power estimate

http://www.jscustompcs.com/power_supply/ - and another

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&i...=Google+Search - here you can look at any of the p/s round ups done by different sites. But I think http://www.anandtech.com/showdoc.html?i=1841 should be perfect for you.
