I'm looking for a soundcard (preferably under $25usd) that is very compatable with Linux (gentoo, debian, and slackware). I would like for it to be able to handle my 2 small speakers and a subwoofer, and leave my cpu untouched. Those are pretty much my only requirements, as I'm just trying to relieve the processor of calculations a sound card should be doing.
The Soundblaster Live! series PCI soundcards are well supported and even supports hardware mixing using the ALSA drivers. They have been around for a while now and can be found for next to nothing. Just make sure you get a "real" Live card - one that is based on the emu10k series chips.
This is a Soundblaster Live! 5.1 retail I found at Newegg in case you're from the US. You can get them a lot cheaper than $30 in bulk at a lot of stores.
