NAS Synology or QNAP
I'm still thinking about a soho nas. The features keep getting better each year.
So, the question is does anyone use either of the two and thoughts.
They both run a form of linux and the source is available, the arch is both a marvell and atom/celeron type base depending on version.
It is a $600 computer for the most part. Not sure I can replicate all the features for that price and time.
I'd use it for it's ability to be used as a typical storage but some have abilities beyond like plex, tv tuners and camera's as well as remote access.

After a bit of research I picked the Synology. Reviews seemed to indicate the software was beer than then the QNAP. It does have lots of features and no problems so far.
Have you thought about building a freenas box?

I couldn't reply yesterday. Thanks for the reply.
I've built a few of the nas systems over the years. Not really impressed. I'd still have to build about as an expensive of a system. Really I have parts laying around.
Have two older nas that did well considering how old they were. Small and well built made me think of upgrading.

I have a Synology DiskStation DS212j. I like it, just kinda slow. Wish I would have gotten a faster one or I may build one myself some day. I mainly use it for video storage/server for DLNA to TV's. Setting it up is pretty easy.

I'd heartily suggest the WD. I have a WD MyCloud 4TB box here, and was able to pick it up from WD's Refurb site for $149. Plays nicely with Linux (either NFS or CIFS mounting works fine), has SSH capabilities, and works with Windows, iPads and Androids. Have set up my sister and others in my family on it, and all can easily access it over the Internet...it even sets up the UPNP tunnel automatically...no need to monkey with your firewall.

I bought the WD even though others have said it was less quality than the Synology or QNAP.
Dang, I paid $350 for a 6Tb.
Didn't think or know about UPNP. The WD site lets you test drive a box online.
Was interested in ISCSI and running virtual hard drives on network.
Thanks for all the inputs. Guess I'll mark this as solved.
