My webcam works with amsn but not with kopete (linux detects no cam using v4l). Fix?
Hi
I use a Trust webcam called FamilyCam 500. It works perfectly in amsn with spca driver, which was installed automatically by Opensuse 11 at install. However, there is no video device avaliable when I try to use kopete with my webcam. I have tried to find some help in the web but with no success. Somebody know how to create a video device so that I can use my webcam system wide in linux? Thanks a lot! Jose I use Opensuse 11, and I have v4l-conf just installed. |
is it in the list here ? http://mxhaard.free.fr/
|
Not exactly.
In amsn it is detected as Aiptek 1.3 Mpixel, and it works, so I suppose my cam has the same chipset that Aiptek 1.3 Mpixel has. |
is it a USB web cam ? if so check how Linux sees it using lsusb
|
First of all, sorry for the delay. I have been out these days.
The result of the command lsusb is: "# lsusb Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub Bus 001 Device 003: ID 04fc:504a Sunplus Technology Co., Ltd SPCA504a Digital Camera Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub" So the system sees the webcam. What sould I do to make Kopete to see it also? Thanks a lot! |
Are the v4l modules loaded, as stated on the Koppete webcam support page ?
what version is the spca5xx module that Suse loaded ? modinfo spca5xx latest driver for your camera, if you should need it. |
Ok, let me explain...
- I installed the rpm packages "gspcav-kmp-default" and "gspcav1-kmp-default" which provides the webcam driver spca5xx and others. I did it in order to get the webcam working in amsn, since I found no comprehensive information to do it system wide. And it works in amsn. - When I use the command you told me: #modinfo spca5xx or #modinfo spca504a or #modinfo SPCA504a the result is the same: "could not find module" By the way, how could I load the module? It is curious that a help page as Koppete webcam support page could be so unhelpful: "First, activate the video for linux (v4l) support in your linux kernel. If you need to load the modules, they are v4l-compat, v4l-common, and videodev." - I don't know if I have the v4l modules loaded. I don't know how to load them. In YAST I have installed the package "v4l-conf", but it is the only thing I can say. Thanks a lot for helping me! |
How about showing the complete output of lsmod then we can see what module is loaded for your camera, as well as if the v4l modules have been loaded..

:)
You supposed I knew about that command. OK so I see gspca which would be the camera module..
but I only see one v4l module and there were 3 listed on the kopete page.. looks like you don't have all the v4l modules loaded. and it looks like the KDE folks forgot to pay for their hosting because the wiki is down, so I can't look at the module names now. |
