My Ubuntu 16.04 Root has been destroyed

When this happens their is no way out I think. So what are my options to get the system up and running again?

Is it necessary to buy a new mother board or what?

I need to know in a hurry if you don't mind, because I'm running from a live CD to get here and ask the question.

what do you mean by , root has been destroyed? what happen to destroy it? new install of OS most likely will fix an oops I deleted root. if that is what happened.

Ubuntu doesn't use root in the same manner as most LinuX SYSTEMS. You might try reading the Ubuntu documentation at the link below on root/sudo.
Also, more specifices on your problems might help someone to help you.

I was screwing around with partitioning software and deleted/erased everything thinking I could reload the 16.04 OS but it won't do it, says root not found!

looks like it's time for you to learn how to install a Linux Operating System. ;)

Lola Kews 03-11-2018 04:02 PM

Anybody got and answer?

You do not need a new motherboard. You do need to reinstall the OS. If you don't know how, Google is your friend.

I've installed Ubuntu and others OS lots times without a hitch, but this is one of those times that I was the hitch. Never having a problem like this I am not sure just what to do! Is it unrecoverable? I called a friend and she said I will need a new MB, but she is a blond, so I came here.

if you throw away your shirt it does not mean you have to buy a complete wardrobe, you just need to replace your shirt. Sense you stated you've installed Linux OSes before then this should be an easy fix for you whence you've re-installed your Operating System.

how are you installing root? do default install Ubuntutu and alike have auto partition and install in there set up and install process. Or mount it using a live OS USB and get the fstab, and grub.cfg, and post it in here. then a copy past of your
Code:

ls /mnt
to see how you have your system parted out.

if you can install it, that shows your MotherBoard is working.

Maybe the motherboard is dead and cannot access the hard drive.
Maybe the hard drive is dead.
Maybe ... maybe root is dead, R.I.P. ;)

No telling, no tests are completed, no diagnostics are run, or if all this is done it is kept in secret. Maybe waterboarding helps to obtain this information?

In trying to install it again I used the defaults and let it run, after it down loaded all the software and started installing it stopped and I received this note.

Kernel offset: disabled. Unable to mount root fs on unknown- block (0,0)

This is exactly what the note said.

I was using a 2013 version of Parted Magic 2013-08-01 when I was erasing the disk.

Does the note help anyone tell me how to fix the the problem?

did you try to not opt to download updates while installing? see if that works.

Yes I tried that, but it still seems to be downloading everything, it's when it tries to install that it stops, gives a list of some sort then the note that I identified, I'm really at a loss as what to do or how!
