Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

Question My SATA Unrecognised by RH9.0

Hi,

I have an Intel D865PERL motherboard with SATA support for RAID 0/1 and the ususal IDE connectors. I would like to use this with RedHat 9.0, however RH9 seems not to recognise any kind of hard drive (either IDE or SATA) that I plug into it! Any ideas??

TIA,
Mike

Your distro is probably too old for the kernel to have SATA support. If you can upgrade to one of the later 2.4 kernels you might be OK. 2.6 kernels certainly work. Or just switch to a more recent distro.

Very strange if standard IDE drives are not recognised. Does the BIOS see everything OK? Can you boot into a running linux system off the CD? Any mention of disks in the output of the 'dmesg' command?

Thanks for that Maroon,

I have been given the same advice - i.e. upgrade to a 2.6 kernel - by a friend at work. He recommends Debian (which I notice that you use!). I will visit their site and download the kernel. I guess I'll need more than that though, because I have been told that RH have strayed significantly from the UNIX standard with their 9.0 product.

As regards the HDD, it must be said that I was trying with a 10Gb disk that hasn't been powered up since 1998! Probably knackered - I stuck said disk into another machine running XP and although the disk was detected I could not read/write from/to it.

Thanks for your suggestions,
Mike.
