my partition tables - taken away by aliens?

Hello all,

yesterday I found my dedicated server offline and after bringing it up in recovery mode (network boot at my provider) the partition tables of both harddrives are missing.

Does anyone have any idea how such s*** can happen?

It is for sure that I did not do anything to change partitions or filesystems, I am the only one to have regular access via ssh with 2048 bit keys and the smart logs of the drives do not show any errors at all.

So why could partition tables of 2 independently mounted drives vanish suddenly?
Bermuda triangle for partition tables?

Any (serious) ideas?

Kind regards
Michael

Run SMART long tests on both drives.

Check the system logs and the ssh log (usually /var/log/auth). Hopefully you have strong password for your ssh login, otherwise those 2048 bits don't mean anything.

I would be looking at a lower level - controller.
They may be separate drives, but are they on the same controller/bus ?. Even same cable ?. Who knows what your provider has configured.

That happened to me, after trying to create a partition to install FreeDOS, but without changing the partition table.

The most likely culprit is a controller, or cable. I have had a partition get jumbled from a bad IDE ribbon cable, so hardware problem like that can result in a corrupted partition table, even if not making any changes to it.
