My modem dials-up, connects, but I can't browse

Hello I'm a newbie

I experinced a problem with my Internet connection.
I could connect to the Internet by means of dial-up but when I opened the browser nothing happened.
What could be wrong?
I probed this on both a RedHat 5.2 (kernel 2.0.x?) with the build-in Netscape and after that with RedHat 7.1 with the build-in Konkeror.

Do you have your nameservers in the file /etc/resolv.conf?

First, how you got it work or how you know it's working?
does ifconfig show ppp0?
make sure it's working right, then check your broswer it's set to direct connection.
