my laptop's eth0 just took a dump

Its a dell latitude ls p3 500mhz w/ onboard 3com ethernet, RH9 .. it worked fine for a while
then it quit *shrug* when i do a /etc/init.d/network restart it gets as far as
Bringing up interface eth0;
Determining IP information for eth0...PING [gateway]

ive never seen it do this, and none of the computers on this network are allowed to ping the
gateway either, so of course, the ping times out

the DHCP server is still functional, at least according to the other machines
any theories as to what could have caused this?
thanks
andrew

Have you made any changes? Have you remove libraries or upgraded?

sort of

I installed redhat 9 with no additional packages selected, then painstakingly pieced enlightenment 0.16.6 and eterm 0.9.? together rpm by rpm, somehow a bunch of other stuff got installed as well, ie: Maelstrom and Mozilla, but i hadnt asked for from anywhere (yet) . neat is currently broken (it complains about no gnome module to load and crashes) . i installed all C, obj C, c++ and nasm compilers as well, and have yet to try to compile a new kernel for it, i forgot to install those packages
