My DVD unit can read a data DVD but not an (original) video DVD

Hello everybody,

I was trying to watch a movie from an original DVD that I have bought recently, but I was unable to.

When I put the DVD on my unit and try to mount it (mount /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom) I get this error:

mount: /dev/sr0: unknown device

I found the same error using /dev/cdrom, /dev/sr0 or /dev/dvd on the mounting command.

I try with several original movie DVDs (region 1 and region 2) but I didn't get to mount any of them.

However, on the same PC but in my Windows session I can watch the movie without problem. I also can watch the movie on a normal DVD player.

After trying with the video DVDs, I put a old data DVD that I have recorded a year ago and I could mount it normally, and read the data on it.

My DVD unit is a "PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-K17 ATA", on a SONY VAIO VGN-CR120E.

My distro is Gentoo with kernel 2.6.35-gentoo-r12

The output of lspci is:

Here is the key to the answer.
http://gentoo-portage.com/media-libs/libdvdcss

You may also have to find and install a libdvdcss enabled mplayer or xine.

Details have been discussed at length here at LQ. Search for libdvdcss.

Thanks for your answer stress_junkie,

I installed libdvdcss as you said:

emerge -av libdvdcss

and xine:

emerge -av xine-lib
emerge -av xine-ui

After that I tried again and i still didn't work. However, after rebooting it worked. Now it work even with my (previously install) VLC player. So I suppose in my case it wasn't necessary to install xine, and I only needed the libdvdcss.

Thank you.
