my disk is shown as sda when booting into linux, but as hda inside vmware
Hi all,
I have a dual Windows / Linux machine. I've just upgraded the linux kernel to 2.6.18. Before this, I was able to boot into Linux directly, or from vmware inside linux. Now this doesn't work any more because the disk is seen as sda when booting on the real hardware, but as hda when using vmware. I think this is because it is a SATA disk. I made 2 entries in lilo.conf, to select dev/hda or /dev/sda, and this takes care of loading the kernel ok, but, probably because of etc/fstab, I am stuck with another error when I'm trieing to boot directly into Linux. Is there a way to "force" Linux into a unified naming scheme? Or do you have other suggestions for solving this? I have a Dell Inspiron 6400 laptop. Not real sure about the hardware... Please keep in mind that I'm a noob, but I am struggling :) Thanks a lot, Andrei |
Change the configuration of the virtual system to use a SCSI adapter instead of the IDE interface for the virtual hard drive. Delete the existing hard drive configuration, then add a new hard drive. Specify a SCSI interface and the drive designation in the virtual system will be '/dev/sda' instead of '/dev/hda'.

I'm sorry, but I don't think this works. The virtual machine is set up to use a physical disk. This way, I can use the same Linux installation for booting directly into it, or using it inside vmware.
