My BIOS won't recognize my CD-DVD drive

Hello,
My CD-DVD drive have suddenly stop working in my laptop and when I've checked the BIOS setup I've seen that the drive is no longer recognized by BIOS (there is no option for this drive so I can't enable it). I don't know what CD-DVD drive I have (since I can gather information about it because it's not recognized by my laptop) but I think it's a Matshita CD-DVD driver. I use Ubuntu 10.04. Do you know how to make it work again?
Thank you very much!

Maybe it died...

Your BIOS will not recognize the DVD if the circuitry of the drive has failed. If you have the CD/DVD drive set as the first boot device, and put a bookable disk into the drive at boot, does it spin up?

I can't set it as first boot device because both BIOS and boot device menu doesn't show it. However when I put a CD on the device it makes sound like it's going to reproduce the CD but it stops and nothing happens since the CD player device is not recognized by BIOS so thus is not recognized by Ubuntu too.

I may move, but is it alive...

Can you try to remove the drive from the laptop and then reinstall it? There is a small possibility that it has been displaced and lost its connection. By the way, will the drive open if you press the catch button as the system starts to POST?

Do not be too optimistic about this drive and the future, but if you remove it, you can note its specifications for a replacement.

Check the cable, it may be loose. If it's not that, maybe take the drive to a computer shop and see if they can fix it or replace it.

Thank you, indeed the problem was that the CD-DVD drive was damaged and since I've replaced it with a new one (70 euro) it works ok.
