Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

Question MX 4000 vs Radeon 9600 XT?

Ok... I'm running SUSE Linux 10.0 on an ATI Radeon 9600 XT... And it really doesn't do that well on OpenGL... I get about 3400-6000 fps on glxgears depending on whether I hold my mouse idle or not.

Anyways... Being that Nvidia OpenGL support is significantly better than ATI's, I have been tempted to rip out my 9600 XT and put in my old Nvidia 64 MB MX4000. However, being that my ATI Radeon is much more higher end for anti-aliasing and filtering than my old Nvidia card, would it really make any sense to replace the cards in order to achieve better frame rates?

I've tried searching for benchmarks on the cards for Linux, but I haven't really found any online at all.

Anywho... Feel free to reply back and offer suggestions... Thanks.

That would depend... What do you want the higher frame rate for? Dinky little OpenGL games that come with KDE or cedega running Matrix Online or maybe Quake 4?

If all you do is dinky little multimedia games for KDE and you want a higher frame rate, you are set, just go back to the MX4000. But if you want to try and run real, high end games that need texturing, lighting, advanced mapping, Directx 9.0 or current OpenGL support, etc you really should stick with the ATI 9600XT.

Have you gotten the real ATI drivers with DRI and 3d hardwre acceleration? If so, you should be seeing a vast improvement from any 6+ year old tech like an mx4000.
