Question Multi-core cpu question

Hey I had question about multi-core processors, I recently built a new computer and I used an AMD Phenom II 4 core 3.4ghz CPU...

The question is, is the 3.4ghz rating for all 4 cores firing at once, or is each core 3.4ghz itself?

I'm pretty new to this multicore tech, ive always had very old decrepid computers.
