MSN isp and Linux
Is it possible to setup Linux so it connects to the Msn service?
How? |
Lindows comes with dialers for a few ISPs. I don't think thy have MSN because that is a Microsoft subsidary but I do know they have Earthlink, Juno, and NetZero, just to name a few.

I forgot to mention that I have RH9. Sorry.

Shouldn't be any different though, just set it up as you would any other ISP and attempt to dial in. They may very well use some sort of authentication though that is windoze only, but I doubt it. It's more likely they just piggyback on the same server that a lot of ISP's in your area use (a big reason to just find the cheapest ISP and use their service).
Cool |
Also, my modem won't work with RH.
What modem should I get? If I buy motorola MD-MR2800-W-100 for $6 is it going to work? The problem with MSN is that I am using msn software. Everything is automatic and I don't know any settings. What settings should I find out about? |
I'll move this to the Hardware Forum where some of your deepest questions like "Which modem should I get" might get the attention it needs ;)

MSN works very well with linux. Use KPPP and for your user name put in msn/username or what ever you user name is.
I just canceled MSN my local phone company just installed DSL. |
Connect to MSN under Linux?
weeeell it should work, but I bet there's some code like if [ $OS_TYPE = Linux ]; then drop_connection() fi don't forget this is the Micro$oft Network :p |
cable quandary
I just installed a partition using "partition magic" (I have a lucent win modem) and use a diskette to boot RH9. Everything works fine except that I can't get online. I have a Toshiba cable modem using Earthlink. When I configured the internet settings I listed the IP adress, subnet mask, etc... Also, my mozilla browser refuses to work. I checked the status and it said I was active.
I also used the terminal to get telnet<, but when I typed my IP address at the prompt it gave me a bash error messege. I am thoroughly dumfounded. Please help. :newbie: |
Mind you, the sheer irony of connecting to M$N using Linux...
|
yeah....it works.....but depending on what tool you use to set it up you may have to enter the primary and secondary dns....manually...
so be sure to get those for your area.... they will try to tell you that you dont need it but tell them you dont like their setup software or that you prefer to setup your connection manually. |
