Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

MSI StarCam 370i

Hi,

The release of Vista has inspired me to try to end my Windows use entirely. I have been able to get pretty much everything working in Linux with the exception of my webcam, an MSN StarCam 370i.

It seems to be detected, although not correctly. Both aMSN and Kopete detect the device as a "V4L: Sangha 350k" and under channels it's "SN9CXXX." But the only image I get is a bunch of colourful dots.

Has anybody had any success getting this camera to work in any distro? I would rather not half to fork out for a new one.

Hi there... Are you still wondering about that webcam??
Could you do the command 'lsusb' or 'lshw' and post the information that it returns for the Camera??
If you don't have either of those commands (but you should) you can install them from sourceforge or other places..
OR - Look in your systems Control Center type area, and identify the USB camera. What I'd like to see is the vendor and product ID's which will look something (or exactly) like this:
USB_DEVICE (0x0c45 : 0x60c0)
as well as any other info there, related to the camera.

Update: If that is the correct device, you should be using the 'LE' (or 'Light Edition') of the sn9cxxx/spca5xx driver:
Code:
154 0x0c45 0x60c0 Sn-535 sn9c105 Mi0360 Yes jpeg spca5xx/LE *****
As you see there, your camera rates 5-Star for performance, and is fully supported.
Info referenced from: http://mxhaard.free.fr/spca5xx.html which I refer to often for camera driver info.
