MS mouse not working

This is a gentoo question but the people on gentoo couldnt help me so i guess i need to try here. Im installing gentoo (2.6.1 kernel) I've compiled the kernel and got the system going, and i emereged X and kde but i noticed that my mouse wont work, I've tried all the different options in the kernel config using drivers as modules and having them compiled into the kernel nothing seems to work, has anyone else had this problem any one know of a sure fire solution?

Also is a wireless usd ms opti mouse

and i think the kernel is having trouble finding the modules, cuz when i added them to modules.autoload, during start up its says failed to load{usbcore, hid, input, mouse}

Its no the kernel, its your XF86Config file.

Run xf86config as root. Chose your correct mouse settings and that should fix your problem.

well i have an ati radeon 9600 i have to run fglrxconfig so i dont know if that has something to do with it
should i also run the normal config?

I don't use ATI video cards, so I don't know anything about fglrxconfig. I do know that xf86config will set up your mouse, keyboard, video card, and monitor settings. Try running xf86config first, get your mouse working, then save the XF86Config file as XF86Config.bak and just copy and paste the mouse settings.

Now if fglrxconfig has mouse settings and stuff in that, use that. Its not the kernel thats your problem, its setting up X. Oh, look in /dev is there /dev/mouse? If there is then you have your mouse already configured, if not then i'm sure there is a device for your mouse in there. Try playing around with both configs for a while.

well i tried that still not working :( man this is frustrating. I put in a knoppix disk and my mouse worked fine i noticed it said using hotplug manager for mice at /dev/input/mice so i made sure hotplug was enabled which it was. And i ran all the configs still nada... does anyone have the same mouse i do and have they gotten it to work with gentoo 2.6.1. I'm thinking maybe something is just missing here
