mplayer launched from apache-php plays, but no sound...

a simple php file executed by apache:

<?php system("mplayer mysong.mp3"); ?>

it executes; eventually even the output of mplayer shows up in the browser, but no sound.

THE REAL QUESTION IS how does one launch a "headless" audio application (i.e. one with no tty)?

If you're using ubuntu the process owner needs to be in 'audio' group to use sound output. Check /etc/group for apache process owner.

Since you're so smart:how do I give user "www-data" permission to execute an openvt? Huh? Bet you don't know that.

Actually, what I'm getting is: "Could not get a file descriptor referring to the console" when I run "openvt" as the www-data user at the command prompt.

You do not have the write access to the vt device. Probably your standard user does not have the right also, so there is no difference if you fire openvt as standard user or www-data (root is not a standard user). Just chmod the vt device you want to open and specify it by parameter so that openvt tries to hook on the same device...

cheers,
