Moving /var or /home to another HDD

I am seeing alot of post regarding adding extra HDDs. And it looks real easy. But I need to move my /var to a bigger HDD to hold my mysql databases. Or can I just move my mysql databases to the other HDD?

One reason to add a second hdd is to increase speed. Your disk access runs faster when you are accessing two drives in parallel. So one of the considerations in what you move is that you want to load balance the two drives so that each drive does approximately half of the I/O.
