mouse wheel problem

Hello all,
I just got RH7.3 installed today and so far everything is great, but there's two minor problems. One being that my mouse wheel doesn't work. I did a search on it and edited the /etc/X11/XF86Config (and the COnfig-4) files to have Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5" in the mouse section, but still it doesn't work. What else should I do? Any advice is much appreciated.

is there any graphical configuration for mouse in redhat?
if so? Select "Wheel Mouse" or "Wheel Mouse (PS2)"
if you didn't have graphical configuration for mouse then open teminal there type setup, you will get text based configuration tool.
select mouse, then in type select "Wheel Mouse" or "Wheel Mouse (PS2)"

RH7.3 unfortunately doesn't have wheel mouse as one of the setup options, but I find it hard to believe that it won't work at all. 7.3 isn't that old. Any other suggestions?

But what abour the rest of your settings for the mouse in your /etc/X11/XF86Config[-4] file?

What do you have as the number of buttons?

As far as I recall if you want the ZAxisMapping of buttons 4 and 5 to work (ie the wheel forward and backward rotation), you have to state that you have in fact 5 buttons (left, center, right, wheel forward, wheel backward).

#*-------------------------------------------------------------------------*#

Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Logitech WheelMouse"
Driver "mouse"
Option "Buttons" "5"
Option "Device" "/dev/mouse"
Option "Protocol" "IMPS/2"
Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
EndSection

#*-------------------------------------------------------------------------*#

Obviously, one has to put the matching identifier in the ServerLayout section.

Section "ServerLayout"
[...]
InputDevice "Logitech WheelMouse" "CorePointer"
[...]

Note that not all X programs support the ZAxisMapping protocol, and to get support for more applications you need to install the imwheel package.

Here are the revalent sections of my RedHat 7.2 with a Microsoft Intellimouse 1.3A PS/2 Wheel Mouse...

----------------------
# XFree86 4.0 configuration generated by Xconfigurator
Section "ServerLayout"
Identifier "XFree86 Configured"
Screen 0 "Screen0" 0 0
InputDevice "Mouse0" "CorePointer"
InputDevice "Keyboard0" "CoreKeyboard"
EndSection

Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Mouse0"
Driver "mouse"
Option "Device" "/dev/mouse"
Option "Protocol" "IMPS/2"
Option "Emulate3Buttons" "off"
Option "Buttons" "5"
Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
EndSection

---------------

There are other sections, but these are the only ones that mention the Mouse. For me the "IMPS2 was the killer. Even if you don't have a Microsoft Mouse it may be an Intellimouse compatible.
