Mouse Interacting Erratically With Windows

Examples

1. Mouse actions (scrolling and clicking) on top window get passed down to lower window when two windows are both open on the same desktop and stacked

2. Windows refuse to react to mouse actions unless an elaborate ritual of first right clicking the menu bar and then right clicking the WinDec bar is undertaken. After which the window reacts normally. Note that this doesn't work with GTK3 apps which don't have a menu bar for the first right click and have to be killed outright if they're not responding to the mouse. The same goes for application pop ups (although it is possible to get around both those things with the keyboard).

3. This also affects the panel and desktop.

My system is Xubuntu 20.04 installed on a HP Elitebook 8460P. I've tried both the native xfwm4 and openbox window managers and the problem affects both.

Is it a wireless mouse? I've found my mouse doing odd things, including what you are describing. Changing the batteries fixed it quick and easy. The power manager said my mouse had 50+ % but it still made a difference.

It is a wireless mouse. I've no idea how much charge there is in the battery, though. Linux doesn't recognise the device (a Logitech)

If that is a logitech wireless mouse using the USB unified controller there is no reason for linux not to see it. I have used those types of mice and keyboards for years.

It is cheap to replace the battery just to see if it is a part of the issue.

If it is a bluetooth mouse then that is a different animal altogether.

I don't actually know the difference between a wireless device and a Bluetooth one.

If your mouse is having the exact same challenge on another computer I would start first by replacing the batteries. If the problem still persists your mouse may have had its days.

Most likely your mouse uses Bluetooth to connect to a USB dongle that is connected to your PC so this makes it a wireless technology
