Mouse Focus

I'm having this extremely annoying problem with my mouse pointer. I'm using SuSE 9.2, although I've had this problem with Mandrake also, when using my keyboard in any application, whether it's OpenOffice, my broswer or even editing a file in MC, while typing, my cursor often jumps to where the mouse pointer is making me have to delete the text I just typed, repositon the cursor and retype. The only fix I have is to switch off the mouse temporarily while I'm typing. I'm using a notebook mousepad that fortunately has a button to kill the mousepad. I know it's not the fault of the notebook because this is the third notebook I've used from different manufaturers.

I'm sure there is some setting someplace that turns on "follow mouse pointer" but I can't find it.
