Mouse clicking/selection sketchy on most popular linux distros

On many popular linux distributions such as linux and fedora I am having a really annoying mouse problem. When I select the contents of the window everything works, but when I click anywhere else e.g. the border of the window or the taskbar or the desktop nothing happens. I can only get to those If I right click the content of the window and the menu shows up. If I am in a window where there is no right click menu, I have to quit the app with alt-f4 or even restart my machine. Also, whenever a sub menu comes up I cannot use the mouse to click the yes/no buttons -- I have to scroll through them with the keyboard. This does not happen with older versions of the distributions and lighter distros such as gnewsense. This happens with the serial and usb mouse. My computer is a lightweight build consisting of an asus motherboard with a pentium dual processor.

If this is very uncommon is there a distro of linux containing:
- ubuntu/fedora like desktop
- no mouse problems
- recognizes usb network adapter
- live cd with gnome based installation

All distros I have tried are either too much like windows, do not work with my usb network adapter, or have mouse issues.

I have tried the latest versions of:
- fedora
- ubuntu
- centos
- mandriva
- gnewsense
- gentoo
- nextena
- debian
- openSUSE
- mint
- slackware

any advice would help considering I am not an expert on unix
