Mounting the cd causes kernel panic

After upgrading to Slackware 10.0 and kernel 2.6.7, I cannot mount my cdrom using
mount -t iso9660 /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom. Instead I get: "Kernel panic: fatal exception in interrupt code ... In interrupt handler- not syncing."

Any ideas?
