mounting external hard drive through usb

I have an external hard drive that I'm having trouble mounting. When I ls /dev/disk/by-*, I don't see any device that could be the drive. Any suggestions?

If you plug in the device, does your syslog show anything related to USB?

Can you by any chance boot a Live CD and generate output with that? Try posting as much brand, type and HW specs nfo as you can. Is it bus-powered or does it have its own adapter? Is it by any chance usable in ahhh, some other OS?
