Mounting CF card in a solid-state recorder via USB
Hello,
I am trying to access a Compact Flash card in a solid-state sound recorder (Marantz PMD670) via USB cable. I follow the instructions for connecting the device via USB, the display on the recorder is showing "I/O Online" as it should be, but the CF card is not mounting. It works under Windows. I tried formatting the card in the device, in GParted and in Windows, same result. This is the output of lsblk:
Code:
p@ppc:~$ lsblk

That line in the syslog output about "bus: 2, device: 17 was not an MTP device" makes me wonder if Windows is/was allowing you to access the Marantz's CF card via a proprietary driver (that may come with Windows). Do you recall installing something from Marantz that came with the recorder?
If you have a USB card reader that can accept CF cards, you may have much better luck accessing the card that way. This is the route I took years ago when accessing my Canon G3 camera was not working via USB. Pulling out the card and using a USB-connected card reader let me mount it directly. I bought one -- a Dynex DX-CR121 -- years ago at BestBuy that accepts CF, various SD, and some others I've never even encountered in the wild before. My memory is a little fuzzy about that purchase but I think it was in the $20-$30 range. IMHO, worth it if you want to use this recorder. It sure seems to me to be the path of least resistance.
BTW, this is an, apparently, discontinued product. I see reviews for it online that date back to 2005. Marantz's web site doesn't even mention it any more---even as a "legacy" product. In fact, the PMD671 is the closest match they list to your recorder and most of the information for that product seems to be missing on the site. Your best bet may be to find a USB-based card reader that accepts CF cards and mount it after removing it from the recorder. (I still have/use that G3 and still pull the CF card to copy off the photos. It just works with minimal fuss.)
Something you could try:
What do you see when connecting the Marantz and issuing "fdisk -l /dev/sdf"? If you see something like:
Code:
...
Device Start End Sectors Size Type
/dev/sdf1 ... ... ... ... VFAT <-- or similar
or...
Code:
Disk /dev/sdf1: ... (size info)
Units: sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
Disklabel type: dos <-- you may see this
Disk identifier: ...
The above is what I see when I issue that fdisk command on my digital camera's SD card when it's in a USB reader. When I access it with a file manager, the system mounts it as "vfat". So... you could try:
Code:
$ sudo mount -t vfat -o ro /dev/sdf1 /some/mount/point
I included the read-only option ("-o ro") because the PMD manual mentions certain files that you shouldn't mess with to maintain access to the digital recordings.
Hoping that some of this helps...

Hi,
Thank you for your reply.
I did not install anything from Marantz on the Windows PC.
"fdisk -l /dev/sdf" doesn't display anything, it just hangs. Same for "mount -t vfat -o ro /dev/sdf1 /media/p/CF".
Either way, I came to the same conclusion as you and bought an external card reader, so problem solved I guess :-)
Thanks again!
