Mounting a second drive that already has RH8 on it.

Hello All,
This is my first post so please bear with me. I am running RH 8 on an HP tc2100 Server.
The original config had a 40 gig HD. I recently bought an 80 gig HD and installed RH8 on it.
The problem is how to get the original drive mounted. If I hook up both drives and try to boot, the system locks up, probably because both drives are identified as hda... I can use one or the other but not both. I want to get the old 40 gig drive mounted so that I can move the data to the 80 gig drive and then reformat the 40 gig drive for storage and backup. Yes I tried changing the jumper to "slave" but that didn't make a difference. I was wondering if I could connect just the 40 gig drive, then boot using the install disks and rename the /boot and / partitions as something else then hook up both drives and try to bring up the system. Any ideas? I don't want to lose the stuff on the 40 gig drive.

Your system should not lock up if you have two drives installed and the jumpers are set correctly. Check your bios to make sure the drives are properly configured. Having two drives should have no affect on the bootloader. They cannot both be identified as hda, hda is master, hdb slave.

This should be very straightforward. Hard to tell what is going wrong.

So you have the 80Gb disk in and it shows up as /dev/hda, right? So it must be jumpered as 'master' I guess.

Then you jumper the 40Gb drive as 'slave' and put it on the same IDE controller and it doesn't show up as /dev/hdb??? At what point do things lock up? Can you read the console messages just before things freeze? You could put it on the other controller and try that. You can disconnect the CD or whatever if you just need the two HDs to copy. Then you should see it as /dev/hdc or /dev/hdd dep. on whether configured as master or slave.

I'm not sure what you mean about using the install disks. One thing you prob. know already - DO NOT attach/detach drives with the power on - I've wrecked hardware that way myself.
