Mounting a CD-R on a DVD drive

Ok, i'm trying to mount a freshly-burnt CD-R on my freshly-installed Lite-On 16x IDE DVD drive.

mount /dev/hdc /mnt/dvd

it complains about input/output error and then about specifying a file-type.

i've tried mounting other discs and i get the same error. The only other thing i've done is tweek the drive a bit with hdparm... any suggestions?

Ok. I'm a noob. I fixed it. Just had a stale fstab reflecting my old cdrom drive. It helps to read the man page when in doubt. Although, it didn't directly address my problem, it gave me a clue.

While you feel like reading man pages, why not have a look at the man page for autofs and then you will be able to magically cd into the CD directory without having to manually mount it.

And once you have finished perusing your CD, and so long as you
have cd'ed back out to another directory you can just do

eject cdrom

to get the cdrom out without having to issue an unmount command.
