mount:you must specify the filesystem type

I am using
mount /dev/sd* /mnt/usb
to mount my USB. It has been working fine until now.

It gives me "mount:you must specify the filesystem type"

Where am I going wrong ? Could you please tell me?

Also is there anyway to automaticlaly load the USB without prompting like in windows ???

On recent kernels and hardware the hotplug is working by default. BTW, have a look at USB Flash Memory HOWTO for some detailed information (expecially section 12.4 about hotplugging).
