Well mates, I have an onboard VIA USB 1.1 controller and a PCMCIA 2ports NEC USB 2.0. I'd like as well to solve that problem, so if you know the solution for that it's welcome. Anyway, the most important thing for me at the moment it's to get access to my drive even if I have to use USB 1.1 temporally.

Below the trace of lspci command:

00:00.0 Host bridge: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT8363/8365 [KT133/KM133] (rev 80)
00:01.0 PCI bridge: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT8363/8365 [KT133/KM133 AGP]
00:07.0 ISA bridge: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT82C686 [Apollo Super South] (rev 42)
00:07.1 IDE interface: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT82C586/B/686A/B PIPC Bus Master IDE (rev 06)
00:07.2 USB Controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. USB (rev 1a)
00:07.4 Bridge: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT82C686 [Apollo Super ACPI] (rev 40)
00:07.5 Multimedia audio controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT82C686 AC97 Audio Controller (rev 50)
00:09.0 Communication controller: Conexant HSF 56k HSFi Modem (rev 01)
00:0a.0 CardBus bridge: Texas Instruments PCI1410 PC card Cardbus Controller (rev 01)
00:0b.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL-8139/8139C/8139C+ (rev 10)
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: S3 Inc. VT8636A [ProSavage KN133] AGP4X VGA Controller (TwisterK) (rev 01)
02:00.0 USB Controller: NEC Corporation USB (rev 41)
02:00.1 USB Controller: NEC Corporation USB (rev 41)
02:00.2 USB Controller: NEC Corporation USB 2.0 (rev 02)

Lots of thanks to all!!

If the drive is capable of running at USB 1.1 then plug it in to your onboard port. If all is well you should see drive details if you scan the output of dmesg and the RH hardware GUI.

You will need to add NTFS support if you haven't already done so.

And just mount it as previously posted.

I missed the cb_alloc line in the dmesg... okay, this is a laptop and a cardbus card... what kind of laptop, the thing seems to be miss-allocating IRQs and getting really confused with loading ehci against a cardbus card.

Cheers,

Finegan

Michaelk, as you can see at the begginig of the dmesg trace I put, NTFS is already installed. Besides, the lsusb trace I put belongs to the one I get when I connected my drive to my onboard USB 1.1 controller (It works perfectly under Windows XP). I'll try to put a complete trace of dsmesg connecting my drive to this USB port, since I'm not sure if it was when I got the one I put. I'll post it later. I think I've already tried what you suggest but I continues without working at all. Anyway, I'll try it again at the same time I get the dmesg trace I've promised you...

Well Finegan, I know my laptop isn't perfectly configured but I don't know if that might affect to my problem. It's very likely you know it better than me. I have a Compaq Presario 725EA. All details about chips are above in the dmesg, lspci and lsusb traces I put. Anyway, if you need to know anything else, just let me know.

Just thank you all of you for the time you are spending helping me with this neverending problem. Cheers mates!

Check to see you have the usb-storage and scsi_mod modules loaded.

After doing /sbin/lsmod command I get that:

Module Size Used by Not tainted
mousedev 5332 1
keybdev 2880 0 (unused)

If you meant if I have USB Mass Storage support selected in USB support options when I execute 'make xconfig', it is. I have as well SCSI support and SCSI disk support selected. I have all of these three options selected as a module. So, I don't know why they don't appear in the trace when I type 'lsmod' command. Just in case you might have any doubt, after select all these options. I did

'make dep'
'make modules module-install'
'make bzImage'

And this is the kernel I'm currently using...

Well, as all of you see, the problem is being quite hard to solve. Do you think we'll beat it??!!

Thanks to all!!

So you built them as modules.

Try loading them with modprobe

BTW is the drive plugged in?

Yeah, this one is getting into voodoo land, I checked through similar models at linux-laptop.net and no one else seems to have used (or documented) if a cardbus card is working. From this:
Code:
cs: cb_alloc(bus 2): vendor 0x1033, device 0x0035
PCI: Enabling device 02:00.0 (0000 -> 0002)
PCI: Enabling device 02:00.1 (0000 -> 0002)
PCI: No IRQ known for interrupt pin B of device 02:00.1PCI: Enabling device 02:00.2 (0000 -> 0002)
PCI: No IRQ known for interrupt pin C of device 02:00.2
It seems that possibly, acpi isn't figuring out how to deal with handing out an IRQ to a cardbus card. Possibly newer acpi patches will nail it... your kernel is really close to new... yeah, this isn't one I've seen before.

Cheers,

Finegan
