mount and unmount

sys is 1.7ghz, 1g ram
/dev/hda W98 /dev/hdb MDK 10.1
/dev/hdc cd/dvd rw /dev/hdd cd/dvd rw

I simply do not understand.
I bootup my box.
Insert a blank dvd. > nothing happens, k3b doesn't open.
So, I open k3b. Drag and drop the video file.
Try to burn only to get a;
Device is busy error.
So, I go into konsole.
[don@localhost]$ growisofs -Z /dev/dvd -dvd-video output
Executing 'mkisofs -dvd-video output | builtin_dd of=/dev/dvd obs=32k seek=0'
umount: /mnt/cdrom: device is busy
umount: /mnt/cdrom: device is busy
:-( /dev/dvd: unable to proceed with recording: unable to unmount
[don@localhost]$ su
[root@localhost]# umount /mnt/cdrom
umount: /mnt/cdrom: device is busy
umount: /mnt/cdrom: device is busy
[root@localhost]#

I take the blank dvd out.
[root@localhost don]# umount /mnt/cdrom
umount: /mnt/cdrom: device is busy
umount: /mnt/cdrom: device is busy
[root@localhost don]#

Now, if there is data on the dvd, k3b opens automatically and all is well.

What am I doing wrong?
How do I solve this?
Can I setup /mnt/cdrom as supermount like the floppy?
Would that help?

Below is /etc/fstab.

dlw

/dev/hdb1 / ext3 defaults 1 1
/dev/hdc /mnt/cdrom auto umask=0,user,iocharset=iso8859-1,codepage=850,noauto,ro,exec,users 0 0
none /mnt/floppy supermount dev=/dev/fd0,fs=ext2:vfat,--,umask=0,iocharset=iso8859-1,sync,codepage=850 0 0
/dev/hda1 /mnt/windows vfat umask=0,iocharset=iso8859-1,codepage=850 0 0
none /proc proc defaults 0 0
/dev/hdb5 swap swap defaults 0 0
/dev/hdd /mnt/cdrom2 auto umask=0,user,iocharset=iso8859-1,sync,codepage=850,noauto,ro,exec,users 0 0

You have a process that isn't letting go of the drive.

Open a console, type su and your password

type:

fuser -k /mnt/cdrom/

You'll get a message saying that it needs to be unmounted w/ umount command. Type umount command and it should unmount, freeing it up for the next program that wants it. I've found that Konqueror likes to hold onto possession of the drive after I've used it, and sometimes I use the KDE System Guard to kill it.

After a while you'll start to recognize which processes run away with your system and you can kill 'em as needed.

Hope this helps.

BTW, from what I've read, you don't want to set up your drive to auto mount because you'll have persistent problems like the one you're having.

Good ruck!

Thank you.
That works.
It would take a hundred and nine years to learn all the commands in linux.

Thanks again,
