Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

Mount a physical HFS hard drive

A friend of mine has an HD from an old emac with (of course) some valuable data on it . He's only got a lap top now. Rather than have him waste money on a casing he will use once, I plan to just throw the sucker into my Linux box, mount, and copy.

We're on a limited schedule though and rather than muck around with it then, I figured I should ask about any potential caveats.

Is it as simple as enabling HFS in the kernel, then running
Code:
mount -t hfs /dev/sdb1 /path/to/mount
I'm wondering though if there's a way to find out of the file system is HFS or HFS+. Should fdisk tell me that?

I'm running on a gentoo machine if anyone wants to know.

Cheers

If it is old then I'd suspect hfs.

See this first. http://en.gentoo-wiki.com/wiki/Hfsplus
