Motorola v220 detected but not working

I am trying to get my v220 connected to mandriva through moto4lin. It is listed as supported but what ever I try it will not connect. I have set the device configuration as /dev/ttyACM0 as in the howto's. I am thinking it could be the usb cable that is the problem, it is the one off my hp printer, are there different types of mini usb cables, or are they all the same.
Here are some messages that may shed light on the problem:

dmesg gives:

Dec 31 09:35:14 localhost kernel: usb 3-2: USB disconnect, address 2
Dec 31 09:35:16 localhost hald[5151]: Timed out waiting for hotplug event 1048. Rebasing to 1088
Dec 31 09:35:17 localhost kernel: usb 3-2: new full speed USB device using ohci_hcd and address 3
Dec 31 09:35:17 localhost kernel: usb 3-2: device not accepting address 3, error -110
Dec 31 09:35:17 localhost kernel: usb 3-2: new full speed USB device using ohci_hcd and address 4

Dec 31 09:35:18 localhost udev[6256]: run_program: exec of program failed
Dec 31 09:35:18 localhost udev[6260]: run_program: exec of program failed

lsusb gives:

Bus 003 Device 006: ID 22b8:4902 Motorola PCS E398 GSM Phone

tail -s 3 -f /var/log/messages gives:

Dec 31 10:18:16 localhost kernel: usb 3-2: new full speed USB device using ohci_hcd and address 5
Dec 31 10:18:17 localhost kernel: usb 3-2: device not accepting address 5, error -110
Dec 31 10:18:17 localhost kernel: usb 3-2: new full speed USB device using ohci_hcd and address 6

Dec 31 10:18:17 localhost udev[6517]: run_program: exec of program failed
Dec 31 10:18:17 localhost udev[6525]: run_program: exec of program failed

p2ktest gives:
