Motorola SM56 PCI internal modem
 

I installed Motorola SM56 PCI internal modem in my PC .


I also download and installed software from motorola web site. and this software also created /etc/sm56 .

but when i start KPPP and try to dial then it gives me error that "Unable to open modem".

I don't get any error when i installed sm56-06.05.00-1.rh9.i386.rpm

I am using redhat 9.0.

please help me.

Okay...now it's been quite awhile for me...but

I think you need to check to see what com port that modem is on...

I think you'll find that it's com3 or 4...and you need to make a symbolic
link from com3 to /dev/modem

something like that...can't remember for sure

The /dev/modem link is pointed to /dev/sm56 when i install the sm56-06.05.00-1.rh9.i386.rpm

I also checked to connect with com1 , 2 ,3 but it not works.

The RPM should have installed the driver, but not necessarily loaded it... from the RPM, the module name should be something along the lines of: sm56.o, etc... also make certain that the RPM matches your kernel version. If you've used up2date to upgrade your kernel, then its not going to load.

In console type modprobe sm56 and see it loads properly or prints errors. Type dmesg to more amount error info. Your card may be pci One card. Sm56 driver for rh9 doesn't supports it
