Question motorola sm56 installtaion issues

hi all
when I tried to install the sm56 driver for redhat 9 I get the following message

"Using /lib/modules/2.4.20-8/kernel/drivers/char/sm56.o
/lib/modules/2.4.20-8/kernel/drivers/char/sm56.o: unresolved symbol irq_stat_R487376fc
/lib/modules/2.4.20-8/kernel/drivers/char/sm56.o:
Hint: You are trying to load a module without a GPL compatible license
and it has unresolved symbols. The module may be trying to access
GPLONLY symbols but the problem is more likely to be a coding or
user error. Contact the module supplier for assistance, only they
can help you.
"

any idea what I am missing.

Thanks

Were you using insmod? Try with modprobe.

I'm having an irq_stat symbol in my kernell
What does the output of
Code:
grep irq_stat /proc/ksyms
gives?

If there is one, but with different number, the problem is probably that the module is not
compiled against the same kernel-sources; recompiling the module should help.

If there isn't one, the problem can probably be solved by modprobing some other module first. That said, irq_stat sounds like a kernel internal, so this one applies poorly.

I think there are no easy and trivial ways.
Find the headers for your kernel, put the module in place (if not part of the kernel source tree) and recompile.

Easiest wäy to find correct headers is to compile the whole kernel by yourself (then the headers at hand are the matching ones by definition). To get headers for a stock kernel is distribution spesific. In debian, it is done by installing "kernel-headers-foo" if you are using "kernel-image-foo" (where foo can be e.g. 2.4.26-1-686). Maybe similarly in RH.

Hi
Actually I am not an expert in linux kernel or device drivers.
I am using the redhat 9 and all my wish is to use my modem to run using the supplied motorolla driver
is there any easier way to achieve this
