Why not just waterfall down one of your other computers?

I build new computers only at the top of the waterfall. My other computers are living their second, third, or fourth lives.

I don't want to hassle with refurbished PCs. My budget isn't that tight but I just wanted to try and get through it as cheap as possible. This computer was one of the old ones we replaced a few years ago. I have it loaded with Ubuntu 20.04LTS, 8 TB of various storage devices and a shi*ton of software. Of course I never backed it up. It IS my backup! Fortunately we have critical stuff backed up off site.
.O.K. cool. I would recommend getting getting an UPS eventually which will protect your computer when the electrical power company plays around with the electricity or from weather conditions which is what I did. Those power-strip surge protectors don't work as great as they claim.

You just spent $95 for a motherboard but won't spend $6 to find out what the problem was? Spend the $6, then build the new or not, and sell the tested/working mobo/CPU/RAM combo or piecemeal if you have no remaining use for it/them.

A brief look at ebay.de shows Athlon II X4 processors for socket AM2+ for sale. If your mobo hasn't socket AM2+ ebay.de shows Athlon64 X2 processors for socket AM2 for sale. Many of these processors are offered for prices < 20,- €.
