Newer kernels are compiled with a configuration option that determines the max number of serial ports that can be active at runtime. The config option in 2.6.23 is called CONFIG_SERIAL_8250_RUNTIME_UARTS. I'm not sure what it's called in Centos 5. If it's set at 4, you'll have to rebuild your kernel with a larger value.
