DAMN!! ... ok, is there any more detailed information in /var/log/messages or as returned by the dmesg command? we might have to end up sending the irq, dma, and ioport settings to this thing. Usually with today's modern drivers this isn't necessary but I don't know too much what else to do.

this is what it says:

May 30 18:54:57 localhost kernel: ALSA ../alsa-kernel/isa/opl3sa2.c:905: Yamaha OPL3-SA soundcard not found or device busy

so... what do I do?

by the way, thanks a lot for helping me so much :-)

I would love too however the firewall blocks that sort of thing here. So back n forth thru the board is how it will have to be for now. I'm going for my LPI certification tomorrow so I'll be studying all night 2night. perhaps monday?

in the meantime I'm researching the 'device not found' error I'll let you know if I come up with something.

wow... that's some difficult questions you're asking...

about the card - I can definately telly you that it's NOT a pci card...
it's an internal sound card, Yamaha OPL3-SAx.

I don't know what kind of motherboard I'm using, since this is a laptop...
I can give you the model though, it's a Toshiba Tecra 8000

I'll try to find out what kind of motherboard I have... isn't there any way to do that from linux?

ok, links I have found for the tecra 8000:

http://www.shroom.com/linux/laptop/8000.html
( it mentions about how we may need to specify irq, etc )

also found this snippit on another website:
try catch your souncard using pnpdump
xx# pnpdump > newfile
and run isapnp with your new file
xx# isapnp --configfile newfile

it appears that the sound card doesn't wanna play too nice when software goes lookin for it for pnp purposes.

now here's a toshiba tecra that lists its sound as being a dvd decoder? I think whomever posted this may be a little off but then again it might be worth looking at:

and some more interesting stuff:
http://www.netsys.com/suse-linux-e/2.../msg00873.html

this last post has a good reminder... always, ALWAYS in the BIOS answer 'no' to the PNP OS question.

i'm gonna take a look at those later...

I really don't think that this PC has a DVD-player... however, it would be a neat surprise for changing to linux =)

pnpdump never finds anything... I tried to do it the way you wrote, but it didn't work, isapnp didn't want to process it... but when it ran
isapnp newfile
it didn't output any error message... it didn't output a thing...

is that good or bad?

to be honest I'm really not sure if that's good or bad. I'm so used to just modprobing the appropriate drivers and starting xmms to test it. (I've never had to play with isapnp)

I HAVE SOUND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

in desperation, I tried to run alsaconf, and believe it or not, it found my card and installed a bunch of stuff...
and now, even though aumix is the only mixer that works, I can play sound...

I'd like to thank you a lot for helpping me out, just sorry that it turned out that the solution was so much simpler than we thought =)

well... I'm sure you'll have to help me out with other things later...
ciao man!

congrats!! I was really starting to get worried. Check into the aumix thing... if you read over ALSA's documentation there's a script you can run that will set the volume levels automatically after a reboot. And any mixer should be able to access your volume for you (I guess it depends upon your window manager... I'm in enlightenment myself).

very happy for you,
hope you enjoy all the noise your machine will now make

later,
barto
